A Journey with Petros Markaris (In progress)

The writer and screenwriter Petros Markaris was born in Istanbul in 1937, studied economics in Austria and settled in Athens in 1964. Multilingual and cosmopolitan, his novels have been translated into 16 languages. According to the British newspaper Observer, he is ‘one of the 10 best crime writers in Europe’. He was awarded the Quais du Polar in Lyon in 2013 and the Cross of the Order of Merit of Germany in 2014. In his works he highlights key contemporary issues such as the housing crisis, corruption, gender violence, unemployment and the dangers of the internet.

Special mention should be made of his collaboration with the great Greek director Theodoros Angelopoulos. Markaris was a key collaborator of Angelopoulos, with whom he co-wrote seven scripts, including “An Eternity and a Day”, which won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The film follows the author’s life in his everyday life, with a special emphasis on following the publication process of his new book, where the protagonist, police officer Haritos, solves another crime. Through everyday life, the lonely figure of Markaris unfolds, as well as the charismatic speaker who fascinates audiences wherever he is. At the same time, people close to him and scientists will speak, offering another dimension to his turbulent life.
